Iris: A Conversational Agent for Complex Tasks
نویسندگان
چکیده
INTRODUCTION For decades, the promise of computers that communicate with us through natural language has been depicted in works of science fiction and driven research agendas in artificial intelligence (AI) and human-computer interaction (HCI). As early as 1964, Joseph Weizenbaum demonstrated how a computer program could hold open-ended conversations using a large set of pattern matching rules [45]. Terry Winograd later developed a more sophisticated program that could act upon natural language requests within a simplified “blocks world” [46]. In recent years, virtual assistants such as Siri and Cortana have increasingly applied conversational agents to real-world problems, such as finding local restaurants and scheduling calendar appointments [24].

Adapting a Virtual Agent's Conversational Behavior by Social Strategies
Interpersonal encounters are a complex phenomenon in human-human interaction. As social encounters with virtual agents become more important, these agents have to cope with problems of social perception, as well. To account for tasks concerned with the acquisition, utilization, and recall of social information, we earlier proposed to equip virtual agents with a Person Memory. In this paper we p...
متن کاملOn the use of multi-agent systems for the monitoring of industrial systems
The objective of the current paper is to present an intelligent system for complex process monitoring, based on artificial intelligence technologies. This system aims to realize with success all the complex process monitoring tasks that are: detection, diagnosis, identification and reconfiguration. For this purpose, the development of a multi-agent system that combines multiple intelligences su...
متن کاملToward Continual Learning for Conversational Agents
While end-to-end neural conversation models have led to promising advances in reducing hand-crafted features and errors induced by the traditional complex system architecture, they typically require an enormous amount of data due to the lack of modularity. Previous studies adopted a hybrid approach with knowledge-based components either to abstract out domainspecific information or to augment d...
متن کاملSituated Conversational Agents
A Situated Conversational Agent (SCA) is an agent that engages in dialog about the context within which it is embedded. Situated dialog is characterized by its deep connection to the embedding context, and the precise cross-timing of linguistic and non-linguistic actions. This paper describes initial research into the construction of an SCA that engages in dialog about collaborative physical ta...
متن کاملDesigning a Conversational Interface for a Multimodal Smartphone Programming-by-Demonstration Agent
In this position paper, we first summarize our work on designing the conversational interface for SUGILITE – a multimodal programming by demonstration system that enables a virtual agent to learn how to handle out-ofdomain commands and perform the tasks using available third-party mobile apps in task-oriented dialogs from the user’s demonstrations. We then discuss our planned future work on ena...
